Rare first edition of one of the most important works in the history of Antarctic exploration.

James Clarke Ross's account of his Antarctic expedition. On this famous voyage, Ross circumnavigated the Antarctic continent, discovered the Ross Sea, Ross Island, the Ross Ice Shelf, Victoria Land, Mount Erebus, and attempted to penetrate the Weddell Sea. This was the first scientific expedition sent out specifically for Antarctic exploration and research. On his return to England, Ross was knighted and awarded the gold medal of the Geographical Societies of London and Paris.

2 volumes. First edition.Ā London:Ā John Murray, 1847. 8vo. Rebound half brown calf and marbled boards. Pages: Vol.i: Lii, 366; vol.ii: [vii], 447. 8 tinted lithographic plates, 8 engraved maps and charts, 18 wood engravings throughout text.

Bound in half brown calf and marbled boards. Stamped and ruled in gilt and blind. Lettering and motifs to spine in gilt. Damaged.Ā Binding loosening on both volumes, particularly second. Front cover of first volume separating from spine. Some preliminaries of first volume freed from binding. Spine of first volume missing portions. Both volumes weathered on edges and corners. Marbled paper boards chipped. Contents in good condition. Ex-libris stamp on FBEP of both volumes. Age toning and spotting throughout. Loss to folding maps in vol.I. Final folding map of vol.II missing.
