Diary of a Wimpy Kid (Easton Press Signed Collector's Edition)
KINNEY, Jeff. Diary of a Wimpy Kid. Norwalk, Connecticut: The Easton Press, 2015.
Octavo. Full red leather. Spine with raised bands, 22-carat gilt accents. Illustrated vignette in gilt to front cover reproducing the design of the first edition. All edges gilt. Moiré silk endpapers. Satin ribbon page marker. [vii], 217, [i]pp. Signed Collector's Edition. Signed by the author on the special signature page. Includes signed Certificate of Authenticity and bookplate adhered to front endpaper. Originally published New York: Amulet Books, 2007.
Jeff Kinney (b. 1979) spent eight years developing Diary of a Wimpy Kid before it was picked up by a publisher — the story having first found its audience online at Funbrain.com, where it accumulated twenty million readers before its print publication in April 2007. The book entered the New York Times bestseller list immediately and stayed there for years; the series has since sold over 250 million copies in more than fifty languages, making it one of the most commercially successful children's book franchises in publishing history. Kinney served as executive producer on the feature film adaptations, and in 2015 — the year this Easton Press edition was produced — he and his wife opened An Unlikely Story, an independent bookstore and café in Plainville, Massachusetts.
Greg Heffley is a middle school student who is convinced he is destined for greatness and equally convinced that the world has not yet caught up with this fact. His diary — which he insists on calling a journal — records his attempts to navigate the social minefield of middle school with limited success, his complicated relationship with his best friend Rowley, and the daily humiliations of being small, overlooked, and congenitally unable to learn from experience. The book is illustrated throughout with Kinney's own line drawings in Greg's hand, a formal device that both authenticates Greg's voice and gives the pages a visual energy unusual in children's fiction.
The Diary of a Wimpy Kid series has been one of the most effective vehicles in recent memory for getting reluctant young readers to read — its brevity, its humour, its format, and its complete lack of condescension toward its audience have made it essential in classrooms and homes worldwide. The Easton Press signed and leather-bound edition, produced in 2015, offers collectors and families a permanent edition of the book that launched the phenomenon.
Near fine. Some minor loss to titling gilt; otherwise fine throughout.
