Leaven of Malice (First Edition)

Leaven of Malice (First Edition)

First edition.Ā London: Chatto & Windus, 1955. 8vo. Original aqua publisher's cloth hardcover in original price-clipped dust jacket. Pages: [iv], 312.

Jacket designed by Clarke Hutton. Bound in aqua publisher's cloth with gilt lettering to spine.Ā

Very good in good dust jacket. Dust jacket price-clipped, age toned with some chipping at edges, particularly at spine creases. Jacket has been previously stabilised with archival binding tape. Hardcover bindings very good, square and tight, very mild rubbing at spine ends and corners of cover boards. Contents very good, some foxing and markings along edges of text block. Previous owners signature inked to FFEP.

Second novel in Davies' acclaimed Salterton Trilogy. Won the Stephen Leacock Memorial Medal for Humour in 1955. Like much of Davies' work, this work combines humour with deeper insights into character and society, examining how malice—even seemingly small acts of spite—can have far-reaching consequences.
