Mies van der Rohe: The Villas and Country Houses (First Edition)

Mies van der Rohe: The Villas and Country Houses (First Edition)

TEGETHOFF, Wolf. Mies van der Rohe: The Villas and Country Houses. New York: The Museum of Modern Art / Cambridge, Mass.: MIT Press, 1985.

Quarto. Cream cloth lettered in black. Printed dust jacket. 223 pp., illustrated throughout with 227 black-and-white and colour images and 66 text illustrations. Translated from the German by William Dyckes. First English language edition (the original German edition published by the Kaiser Wilhelm Museum der Stadt Krefeld, 1981).

Tegethoff's study remains the standard scholarly account of Mies van der Rohe's domestic architecture. Here the focus is van der Rohe's is not his great glass towers, but his villas and country houses. Spanning from the Brick Country House project of 1923 through to the Farnsworth House of 1951, van der Rohe's preoccupation with dissolving the boundaries between the interior and exterior, between the built and the natural world, are laid apparent.

Through this volume, Tegethoff traces that development with close analytical attention to the drawings and correspondence, many reproduced here for the first time in English, building a portrait of an architectural mind of extraordinary rigour and patience. Published in conjunction with MoMA and distributed by MIT Press, the book brought this scholarship to the English-speaking world for the first time.

Near fine in an unclipped fine dust jacket. Some mild foxing to the upper edge of the text block, as frequently encountered with this paper stock; contents otherwise fine and free from markings.
