The Heart of the Antarctic (First Edition)
SOLD
Included are multiple pieces of media related to the books' contents, as well as for related expositions and shows from around the period of the book's publishing. These items include a facsimile version of the original 16 expedition members signatures (included as a frontispiece in the deluxe edition), a press article for the release of the book, two maps and two image plates that appear to be from another copy of the volumes, and a host of older sales listings for copies of the title.
The book chronicles Shackleton's attempt to reach the South Pole, coming remarkably close - within 97 nautical miles - before being forced to turn back due to severe weather, dwindling supplies, and the deteriorating health of his team members. This decision, though disappointing, likely saved their lives and demonstrated Shackleton's exceptional leadership under extreme conditions.
The expedition achieved several significant firsts: they located the South Magnetic Pole, climbed Mount Erebus (an active volcano), and conducted extensive scientific research. The book captures not only the physical challenges of Antarctic exploration but also the psychological strain, the beauty of the harsh landscape, and the camaraderie among the expedition members.
The book includes numerous maps, photographs, and detailed accounts of daily life in Antarctica, making it both an exciting adventure story and an important historical document of early 20th-century polar exploration.
2 Volumes. First edition. London: William Heinemann, 1909. 4to. Re-backed dark-blue publisher's cloth retaining original spine strip. Pages: vol.1: [ii], frontispiece, xlviii, 372; vol.2: [ii], frontispiece, xv, 419. 12 watercolour plates (with captioned tissue guards), 204 photographic plates. 3 fold-out maps and fold out panorama in pastedown at rear of vol.2.
