Cook's first novel. This is the true first edition. Set in outback Australia, a young school teacher is stranded in an isolated outback mining town. After a drunken visit to a gambling den he finds himself broke and without a means to escape the town. An exploration into both the kind hospitality and violence that exist in remote Australia. Provided the basis for the 1971 film of the same name (released in some countries under "Outback"), regarded by some critics to be the greatest Australian movie ever made.

Overall condition: excellent. Dust jacket price-clipped, a touch rubbed at corners and spine edges. Hardcover boards well preserved, spine gilt bright. Some minor age tonight to end papers and previous owners inscription on FFEP. Otherwise, contents clean and fresh.
