Wanderbilder aus den Dolomiten (First Edition)

Wanderbilder aus den Dolomiten (First Edition)

This immense and impressive volume catalogues the photography taken by Wundt through his multiple trips across the Dolomites. A gifted climber, Wundt scaled many routes that local guides considered impossible, giving him the opportunity to take photography in locations that had yet to be reached by others. Fortunately, Wundt was also a gifted photographer. His ambition was “Alpinismus als Kunst” - Alpinism as art. The plates within this volume are a stunning testament to his work and beliefs. Large, in fine detail, and printed sparing no expense by one of the leading European fine publishers of the time.

Wanderbilder aus den Dolomiten is a large-format portfolio of sixteen heliotype plates after Wundt's own photographs of the Dolomite peaks he knew so intimately: the Cimone della Pala from the Rolle Pass and from the summit of the Rosetta; the first light on the Travignolo Pass; the rock walls of the Cimone della Pala; the Pale di San Martino at San Martino di Castrozza; Monte Cristallo in winter; the Drei Zinnen; the Cadini group; and others. Eight of the sixteen plates are hand-coloured by the Munich painter Professor G. Herdtle, their tints rendering the quality of Dolomite light with a delicacy that pure heliotype could not achieve. Contemporary reveiwers were immediately taken with the work. Jacques Perret, in his authoritative Regards sur les Alpes - 100 livres d’exception 1515-1908, included this work amongst his other 100 greatest Alpine works of the time.

The portfolio is presented in the original Flügel-Mappe — a winged-fold case in illustrated boards with dark red leather-look linen at spine and corners, the cover bearing an elaborate coloured heliotype illustration of the Dolomites against a drawn landscape background with two-colour title lettering. The sixteen loose plates are large format, each approximately 44.5 by 57 centimetres overall with an image area of 27 by 36 centimetres, several accompanied by tissue guards. An introductory text booklet of ten pages accompanies the plates, itself illustrated with sixteen further photographic images, three drawings, and numerous vignettes. This copy is complete, with all sixteen plates and the full introductory text present.

First (and only) Edition. Berlin: Deutsche Verlags-Anstalt, 1894. Imperial Folio. 26 leaves. 10 indroductory pages and 16 plates, 8 in colour. Original half red linen and pictorial cover boards. Very good. The portfolio case shows some edge wear and light surface marks consistent with its age. The plates have mild toning, with occasional minor markings, but are otherwise clear and bright. The eight hand-coloured plates retain their original tinting well, with multiple distinct colours remaining clearly differentiated — a meaningful survival after 130 years.

Full title: Wanderbilder aus den Dolomiten in Farben gesetzt vom Maler Professor G. Herdtle. Herausgegeben von der Sektion Berlin des Deutschen und Ă–sterreichischen Alpenvereins.

Provenance: From the library of Warwick H. Williams.
